At Wyckoff Advertising, our experience with photo retouching began with brushes and graphite applied to negatives and photographic prints. Digital retouching relies on those same skills and sensibilities but is much faster and capable of far finer results. Photoshop retouching can, in the hands of an inexperienced operator, look fake or even worse. In the hands of a skilled and sensitive artist, digital image manipulation will fool even the most expert viewer unless the scene depicted is obviously impossible in real life. As we at Wyckoff Advertising like to tell our clients, when we started using Photoshop retouching, Photoshop didn't have a version number - it was just Photoshop and it came packaged on 4 floppy disks (remember those?). We use a very late version of this powerful software to improve | remove | repaint | re-color | and otherwise perfect our photographs. It is with a deft hand that Ellen Wyckoff stealthily restores antique photos without losing the precious "feel" they once had. Tom Wyckoff is often found at his Macintosh putting several hundred "points" around a seemingly impossibly complicated photograph of a large machine, producing the "clipping path" that will make the end result look like the monster machine was simply floated onto a pure white background.
